What is a green tea?

What is green tea?

Green tea has been heavily marketed as one of the top superfoods over the recent years. What is benefits of green tea? People have been talking about green tea benefits for many years now, and with over a decade of research on the health benefits of green tea, it’s easy to see why so many people regularly drink it. It is claimed to help prevent cancer, lower blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels, increase fat burning, reduce the risk of dementia... The list of the amazing health benefits of green tea just keeps going on and on.
The tea is made of dried leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, while its potential health benefits are believed to be related to highly potent antioxidants known as catechins which are even more powerful than vitamins C and E. These antioxidants are also found in black tea which is obtained from the same plant, however, green tea goes through different production processing than black tea which is why it contains a higher concentration of catechins.  Catechins as well as a number of other antioxidants found in green tea.So, does green tea help prevent cancer? It most certainly seems so. Several scientific studies have shown that regular green tea consumption significantly reduces the risk of some types of cancer, in the first place lung cancer and prostate cancer. Some studies also imply that cancer patients may benefit from green tea drinking as well.

Many health benefits of green tea require further studies but the results of those conducted so far are very encouraging. The beverage seems to be good for the heart and cardiovascular health because the antioxidants found in green tea act as dilators and reduce the risk of blood clotting which in turn helps prevent heart attack and stroke. Evidence for benefits of green tea consumption on oral health, prevention of cavities, reducing the risk of dementia and lowering blood cholesterol are quite strong too.

Green tea is in the first place consumed for pleasure and for a large number of potential health benefits but it has also become very popular as a weight loss aid. It contains caffeine and polyphenols which induce thermogenesis, a process which increases metabolic rate and fat burning. Drinking green tea alone, however, is inadequate for successful weight loss. You will still need to stick with your dietary changes and be adequately physically active if you want to get rid of those pounds and keep them off for good no matter how much green tea you drink.
